HDMA COMMENDS GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER FOR APPROVAL OF LEGISLATION TO FURTHER PRESERVE PATIENT SAFETY, VALUE AND
ACCESS TO MEDICINES

Arlington, VA – September 30, 2008 – The Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) commends Governor Schwarzenegger and the California State Legislature for their work to enact SB1307 (Ridley-Thomas), legislation that clarifies and makes necessary improvements to California’s e-pedigree law for prescription medicines.

“HDMA and our primary healthcare distributor members applaud the Legislature and the Governor for working together to enact this important legislation that makes necessary improvements to California’s current pedigree law to further preserve patient safety, value and access to medicines. California is a pioneer in the area of track and trace for prescription medications and SB 1307 allows the state to continue in that leadership role, while at the same time encouraging the U.S. Congress to enact a uniform, federal requirement for pedigree,” said John M. Gray, HDMA President and CEO.

“HDMA continues to advocate for further strengthening the security of the healthcare supply chain and our member companies have taken the lead working with manufacturers, pharmacies, hospitals and other providers to implement California’s e-pedigree law,” continued Gray. “This legislation is the product of months of work by the Administration, the California Board of Pharmacy, the state Legislature, supply chain partners and many others.  HDMA and its primary healthcare distributor members have been active leaders and participants in this process and we continue our commitment to work with California policymakers and our supply chain partners to ensure that California’s prescription medicine supply continues to be safe, secure and accessible to patients in need.”
