Electronic Data Interchange

HDMA encourages its members to:
  • Expand current EDI usage for business documents and support the development of new documents with the ultimate goal of sending all information between trading partners, without using paper;
  • Migrate to the use of public domain, variable-length standards such as X12, depending on individual company needs and those of trading partners;
  • Facilitate the standards maintenance process by supporting the Business Technology Committee (BTC). HDMA will facilitate the standards development and maintenance process by responding to members' needs and by interacting with the appropriate public EDI standards organizations;
  • Follow EDI implementation guidelines published by HDMA as a means of simplifying implementation of EDI;
  • Support the open-network concept. An open-network concept means that third-party clearinghouses will communicate with each other without requiring that both trading partners be their customers and without additional requirements or changes;
  • Recognize that electronic means of business to business communication has been, and continues to be, evolutionary. Migration to other means of communication (e.g. the Internet) with lower costs and quicker response is inevitable and not to be discouraged; and
  • Take prudent steps to maintain security of proprietary business data and sensitive patient data.
