Nexus Award
At HDMA’s annual awards banquet, the Center for Healthcare Supply Chain Research and Genentech, Inc., presented the annual Nexus Award for Lifetime Achievement to Jon Borschow, former President of Borschow Hospital & Medical Supplies, Inc. This lifetime achievement award, the distribution industry’s highest recognition, honors exceptional character; accomplishments; and leadership in HDMA, the industry and the community.
Mr. Borschow’s nearly 40-year career at Borschow Hospital & Medical Supplies began in 1972 at the company founded in Puerto Rico by his father, Sidney. Upon joining the company after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Mr. Borschow worked to incorporate information technology into the company’s operations, allowing it to expand further into pharmaceutical distribution and healthcare logistics. After assuming the role of President in 1979, Mr. Borschow grew Borschow Hospital & Medical Supplies more than 25 percent annually, implementing technological improvements to smoothly scale up its operations while providing unique, customized service capabilities.
Throughout his career, Mr. Borschow has been an active supporter of HDMA, serving ten years (1998–2008) on the Association’s Board of Directors; his tenure included four years on the Executive Committee and two years as chairman. Additionally, Mr. Borschow served on and chaired the HDMA Foundation (now the Center for Healthcare Supply Chain Research) Board of Directors.
“Jon was always ahead of his time, as an innovator and thought leader who championed novel technologies to improve the efficiencies and operations of the healthcare supply chain,” said HDMA President and CEO John M. Gray. “His leadership and guidance for HDMA also came at a critical juncture in our organization’s history, and he is credited for leading the Association into the future, to support the healthcare distribution industry in the 21st century and beyond.”

Power of Partnership Award
At the June 11 Business & Leadership Conference general session, Curt Welling, AmeriCares President and CEO, presented the 2012 Power of Partnership to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Created by HDMA and AmeriCares, the Power of Partnership Award recognizes medical manufacturing and distribution organizations that have shown exceptional dedication to expanding access to healthcare for disadvantaged populations.
Since 1989, GSK has partnered with AmeriCares to provide more than $168 million worth of medicines to people in need in 120 countries. The company’s product donations also support AmeriCares Emergency Pharmacy, a stock of prepositioned medicines and supplies ready to be immediately deployed after a disaster. GSK supported AmeriCares disaster relief efforts with a $252,000 grant to build a water treatment plant for survivors of the 2009 earthquake in Indonesia. GSK employees have a long history of volunteering with AmeriCares in the U.S. and India through the company’s three-to-six-month immersion volunteer program PULSE.
“HDMA congratulates GSK on this award, which honors the company’s efforts to improve health worldwide,” said HDMA President and CEO John M. Gray. “We are pleased to partner with AmeriCares in recognizing GSK’s remarkable commitment and achievement.”
