A 21st Century FDA

Andrew C. von Eschenbach, MD is Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives at the Center for Health Transformation (CHT) and former FDA Commissioner and Director of the National Cancer Institute. During his tenure at the FDA, Dr. von Eschenbach set out to modernize the Agency, helping to design a variety of new programs to strengthen the FDA in its mission to protect and promote public health. Dr. von Eschenbach has held numerous leadership roles throughout his career, entering government service with an outstanding career over three decades as a renowned physician, surgeon, oncologist and medical executive, including Executive Vice President at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. 

Dr. von Eschenbach will discuss the FDA Modernization Project recently launched by the CHT, including steps to ensure the integrity of the food, drugs and medical devices that move through the supply chain. He will highlight the FDA’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies program and its implications for supply chain participants, as well as other agency strategies aimed to ensure the safety of medications, including the FDA’s sentinel initiative.
