The Future of the Healthcare Marketplace: The Quest for Value for All Americans
Supported by Abbott
Ian Morrison, PhD, Healthcare Futurist and Author

Healthcare is in a constant state of change, with three major forces shaping its future. First is the current economic downturn. Healthcare has been relatively unscathed so far, but it will not be immune. Second is the relentless pressure on healthcare to deliver value in terms of quality, reliability and access at an affordable cost. Public and private payers will continue to demand higher performance from the delivery system and will use the tools of transparency, measurement and reimbursement redesign to galvanize a major transformation in the delivery system. The third major force is the once-in-a-decade movement of health reform to expand coverage to all Americans and transform health care value.

How will the Obama administration respond to a challenging economic environment and the pressure to reform healthcare? The industry is looking for a new direction and a new vision. This presentation will focus on the political, economic and strategic context of change in healthcare, describe the possible scenarios and examine how the various players are preparing for the future. It will identify the leadership challenges and opportunities ahead and provide strategic insights on how organizations and individuals can flourish in the future.

H1N1 Influenza: The Healthcare Supply Chain Responds to Pandemic | 1:00 PM–2:00 PM
Perry Fri, Senior Vice President, Industry Relations, HDMA

In the spring of 2009, the healthcare supply chain faced its first real test of pandemic planning in 40 years.  Many assumptions about pandemic that fed government and industry plans were wrong, particularly regarding the origin and the pace at which it would spread.  Fortunately, the severity of the recent situation also fell short of many forecasts.  What did federal and state public health officials learn about their ability to respond to a pandemic and work collaboratively with the commercial supply chain?  What plans has CDC put in place regarding vaccine distribution and information sharing? What role is the healthcare supply chain seeking to play?  Learn how HDMA is working with public health officials, other associations and its own members to better prepare for pandemic response.

Federal and State Pedigree Overview | 2:30 PM–3:30 PM
Scott Melville, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs, HDMA; and Elizabeth A. Gallenagh, Esq., Vice President, Government Affairs, HDMA

An expanding patchwork of state pedigree laws and regulations continues to provide challenges to the efficient distribution of pharmaceutical products, both for manufacturers and distributors. Although state legislative activity declined in 2009, many states moved forward with new regulations to implement laws enacted in prior years.   Moreover, there continues to be interest in pursuing a uniform federal approach to pedigree while the FDA is moving forward establishing guidelines for the unique identification of pharmaceutical products.  This session will provide an update on these important initiatives and provide insight on what lies ahead.
