Controlled Substance Ordering System (CSOS)

Description
HDMA has worked with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on an electronic commerce initiative to facilitate the electronic ordering of Schedule II Controlled Substances, commonly referred to as “CSOS.”

This important partnership involved dialogue and collaboration, as well as connecting the regulatory/business process necessities with the technical aspects of setting up an electronic ordering system for Schedule II controlled substances. HDMA and DEA began a series of discussions in 1999 that have evolved into the current initiative. The overall goal was to simplify the ordering of Schedule II controlled substances while retaining the underlying "closed distribution system" principles of the DEA Order Form (Form 222). This new process allows the automation of a number of other steps, such as verification, audits, and reporting.
