Working Groups
CSOS (e-222) Initiative Work Group
The CSOS (e-222) Initiative Work Group is comprised of HDMA members (distributors, reverse distributors and manufacturers), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), PEC Solutions (FDA’s contractor on the project) representatives, and pharmacies. All of the partners in this process have been working to develop an alternative solution to the cumbersome, paper-intensive DEA Schedule II Controlled Substance Order Form, known as Form 222.

This important partnership has involved dialogue and collaboration, connecting the regulatory/business process necessities with the technical aspects of setting up an electronic ordering system for Schedule II controlled substances. HDMA and DEA began a series of discussions in 1999 that have evolved into the current initiative. The Group's vision is to simplify/implement the ordering of Schedule II controlled substances while retaining the underlying "closed distribution system" principles of Form 222. This new process will allow for the eventual automation of a number of other steps, such as verification, auditing, and reporting.

In the past, the CSOS Initiative Work Group was dividing into smaller project teams; however the entire group has re-convened due to the work being done. The proposed rule has been released by the DEA, and the Group provided comment to this rule. Monthly conference calls are held; in addition face-to-face meetings are called as necessary.
