Product Safety Task Force
The Product Safety Task Force (PSTF) was created by HDMA in response
to FDA’s anti-counterfeiting initiative. As part of FDA’s goal, they
wish to work with industry as a sounding board on ideas, suggestions,
and possible strategies. The PSTF was formed to serve this role, thus
acting as a broad, industry-wide coalition to assist FDA.
The PSTF is made up of healthcare manufacturers, distributors, pharmacies,
retailers, industry associations, and standards bodies. The FDA also
attends meeting in a liaison role. An initial kick-off meeting was held
in August 2003, and since then the group has conducted numerous virtual
meetings and physically met when appropriate. Additional virtual meetings
and face-to-face meetings will be held as necessary throughout 2004.
The overall goal of the PSTF is to provide the healthcare industry with
the business requirements for a track and trace functionality that will
ultimately combat counterfeit product. In addition, the group provided
a response to both the FDA’s 60-day Interim Report on Counterfeiting,
as well as the Final Report released in February of 2004. The final goal
that the group has identified is to develop a migration path showing
how to move from the current barcode technologies to full electronic
track and trace technologies, and the timeline associated with steps
along that path.
